Offers I turned down.
Within the editorial world is a section called "slush readers," these are people who read and comment on the work of other writers.
I turned down several offers of this type of work, mainly because I was more interested in getting my work published than commenting on the work of established writers for the magazines; especially as this job would not help me as a writer.
Another reason is that having read some of the magazines before getting the offers, the term "slush" is apt for the quality. I don't put myself up to be brilliant, but some of the writing is of the standard you would expect from a fifth grader for their homework, and these people were being paid to write while I got rejected.
